VII. ORGANIZATION

iv. Officials ἀρχιερεύς, archiereus (I.Eph(esos) 1089B, l. 4; I.Eph(esos) 1104, l. 3; I.Eph(esos) 1124, ll. 10-11; I.Eph(esos) 1125, l. 3; I.Eph(esos) 1155, l. 6)
χυστάρχης, xystarches (I.Eph(esos) 1124, l. 12; I.Eph(esos) 1125, l. 4; I.Eph(esos) 1155, l. 5)

All five inscriptions mention both offices (the fragment I.Eph(esos) 1089B may certainly be restored in that fashion), always held by the same person, often with the addition that they were held for life (δὶα βίου, dia biou). At Ephesos, the xystos is attested only as a part of the personal titulature of athletes, much like an honorific title.

XII. NOTES

iii. Bibliography Remijsen, S. (2015), The End of Greek Athletics in Late Antiquity. Cambridge.

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Discarded
Note Given that at Ephesos the xystos never acts, but only appears as part of the honorific titulature of athletes, it seems to designate the whole athletic community (Remijsen 2015: 236-7). The offices in question may have been of some important in the synodos (the actual association of athletes), but they appear to be mere honorific titles.
ii. Historical authenticity Certain
