IV. NAME AND TERMINOLOGY

ii. Name elements
Cultic:Ὀλυμπιασταί, Olympiastai -
Personal:Νικασιωνείοι, Nikasioneioi - From the Greek personal name Νικασίων, Nikasion. Nikasions's had his origin in Kyzikos (ASAA 22, 150,5, l. 6). The compound name likely suggests a founder or a benefactor of the association, (cf. Thomsen (forthcoming), Gabrielsen 1997 p. 126-7, Maiuri 1916 p. 141, Poland 1909 p. 73-6).
Theophoric:Ἀσκλαπιασταί, Asklapiastai - From the god Asklepios (Morrelli, I culti in Rodi [Pisa, 1959], 31-33, 115-17).
Note The inscription is fragmented on the right side of the inscription. The descriptive term was restored by Hiller von Gaertringen, and it seems likely based on the phraseology of the inscription (AM 25 (1900) p. 109 no. 108, l. 4).

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Certain
Note The use of cultic, personal and theophoric name elements and the dedicatory-honourific context of the attested inscriptions make the private character of the association certain, although a descriptive term might be lacking.
