CAPInv. 77: Soteriastai Lysistrateioi

I. LOCATION

i. Geographical area Aegean Islands
ii. Region Rhodes
iii. Site Lindos

II. NAME

i. Full name (original language) Σωτηριασταί Λυσιστράτειοι
ii. Full name (transliterated) Soteriastai Lysistrateioi

III. DATE

i. Date(s) 50 (?) BC

IV. NAME AND TERMINOLOGY

ii. Name elements
Cultic:The epiklesis Soter is used of several gods, but most frequently of Zeus: see I.Lindos II 683: Διοσσωτηριαστᾶν κοινόν, Diossoteriastan koinon, with Poland 1909, 178-79, 238. The cult of Zeus Soter is attested in Lindos: I.Lindos II 122 (ca. 225 BC), cf. D. Morelli, I culti in Rodi, Studi Classici e Orientali, 8 (Pisa, 1959), 51-2.
Personal:The personal name Lysistrates. No certain identification with a specific person is possible.
iii. Descriptive terms ἐρανισταί, eranistai
Note The term appears in col. II, l.3 of one of the two inscriptions attesting to this association: IG XII 1, 938. However, if l. 4 ([στεφανωθεὶς ὑπὸ Σ]ωτηριαστᾶν Λυσιστρατείων θαλλίνωι στεφάν[ωι], [stephanotheis hypo S]oteriastan Lysistrateion Thallinoi stephan[oi]) is restored to read [στεφανωθεὶς καὶ ὑπὸ Σ]ωτηριαστᾶν Λυσιστρατείων θαλλίνωι στεφάν[ωι], [stephanotheis kai hypo S]oteriastan Lysistrateion Thallinoi stephan[oi]), then the eranistai of col. II, l. 3 might refer to a different association.

i.c. Physical format(s) I.Lindos II 630 is a rectangular altar of Lartian marble with a cornice at its upper and lower parts. On either side of the text there are two wreaths, probably the golden wreath and the olive wreath mentioned in the text.
IG XII 1, 938 is a fragmentarily preserved rectangular statue base of white marble with a cornice at its upper and lower parts. On the upper surface there is a round mortise. Except for the last line (l. 4) the text is arranged in two columns separated by a wreath.
ii. Source(s) provenance I.Lindos II 630: at the church of Haghios Taxiarchis in the village of Lindos.
IG XII 1, 938: in a heap of stones outside the village Massari (within the territory of ancient Lindos).

IX. MEMBERSHIP

iv. Status With the altar I.Lindos II 630, and the two wreaths mentioned in the inscription it carries, the association honoured one Athanodoros who is described as ἐγγενής (eggenes), i.e. a slave born in Rhodes: cf. H. van Gelder, Geschichte der alten Rhodier (The Hague, 1900) 233, and C. Blinkenberg's commentary on I.Lindos II 630. Probably Athanodoros was a member.

X. ACTIVITIES

iv. Honours/Other activities The association honoured Athanodoros, a slave born in Rhodes (eggenes), with an altar and the award of two wreaths, one of gold, the other of an olive branch (I.Lindos II 630).
Moreover, the inscribed statue base IG XII 1, 938 records the fact that the Soteriastai Lysistrateioi honoured a person (whose name is not known) with an olive wreath.

XII. NOTES

ii. Poland concordance B 290

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Certain
Note The two elements (cultic and personal name) in the full name of this association, together with the probable use of the descriptive term eranistai, renders it certain that it is a private association.
