X. ACTIVITIES

iii. Worship The sakkophoroi from Kalymnos made an offering of thanks (l. 6: εὐχαριστήριον, eucharisterion) to Zeus Hypsistos, Hera Ourania, Poseidon Asphaleios, Apollo and the other gods.
Deities worshipped Zeus Hypsistos
Hera Ourania
Poseidon Asphaleios
Apollo
the other gods

XI. INTERACTION

ii. Interaction abroad The sakkophoroi from Kalymnos made an offering of thanks to Zeus Hypsistos and several other gods (see X.iii) on behalf of the city of Kos (ll. 6-7: ὑπὲρ τῆς Κώιων πόλεως, hyper tes Koion poleos). Although a number of dedications were addressed to Zeus Hypsistos and other gods on behalf of the city (IG XII 4.2 541-543), it is the only instance where the city of Kos is explicitly named as such. In this way the sakkophoroi of Kalymnos set themselves aside from the political community of Kos, underlying at the same time their place of origin (i.e. Kalymnos).

XII. NOTES

iii. Bibliography Maillot, S. (2013), 'Les associations à Cos', in P. Hamon and P. Fröhlich (eds.), Groupes et associations dans les cités grecques. Geneva: 199-226.

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Possible
Note Although the dedication of the porters of Kalymnos was paid out of collective funds (ek ton idion), it still unclear whether the porters acted ad hoc as a way to express their gratitude to gods by setting up a dedication or whether they already formed an organized and permanent group.
