The Milesians honor a musician who was inter alia the "high priest of the local synodos" (ἀρχιερεύς τῆς τοπικῆς συνόδου, archiereus tes topikes synodou). He certainly was the highest dignitary of the association.

IX. MEMBERSHIP

v. Relations The association is defined as the τοπική σύνοδος (topike synodos). This is the local Milesian section of the large international association of the musical artists. Cf. below XII.i.

XII. NOTES

i. Comments As Robert (in Pékary 1965: 123) has explained, this synodos is certainly the local section of the ἱερὰ θυμελικὴ σύνοδος, hiera thymelike synodos, the international association of musical artists. Its usual name in its fullest form is ἡ ἱερὰ σύνοδος τῶν ἀπὸ τῆς οἰκουμένης περὶ τὸν Διόνυσον καὶ αὐτοκράτορα … τεχνειτῶν ἱερονεικῶν στεφανειτῶν καὶ τῶν τούτων συναγωνιστῶν, he hiera synodos ton apo tes oikoumenes peri ton Dionyson kai autokratora ... techneiton hieroneikon stephaneiton kai ton touton sunagoniston (cf. Aneziri 2009: 222, who also accepts (ibid. 223 n. 40) Roberts identification of the Milesian synodos as the local branch of the worldwide association.

XIII. EVALUATION

Note The terminology (synodos) and the typology (see XII.i Comments) suggests a private association.
