IX. MEMBERSHIP

XI. INTERACTION

i. Local interaction Official interaction; association acting on behalf of the group representing them before the authorities

XII. NOTES

i. Comments P.Oxy. LIV 4582 (AD 16) is a petition from and may or may not relate to an association or members of an association. It is more tempting to situate 4583 (AD 45), an oath taken by 7 beekeepers "and the rest of the beekeepers from Oxyrhynchus" (ο̣ἱ̣ λοιποὶ μελισσ̣[ο]υ̣ργοὶ τῶν ἀπʼ Ὀξυρύγχων π̣ό̣λ(εως) hoi loipoi melissourgoi ton ap'Oxyrhynchon poleos) as an indication of an official action on behalf of an association. Most likely not dealing with the same association here given the time span involved but perhaps does indicate some sort of continuity in terms of how members of an occupatiοnal group chose to organize themselves.

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Certain
Note The associative terminology and the apparently necessary declaration suggests that this was an association; private here because, in spite of the nature of the declaration itself, there is nothing here to suggest that this group was other than voluntary (although state compulsion may be something else entirely).
