VII. ORGANIZATION

i. Founder(s) Leukios Orbios (σὺν Λευκίωι Ὀρβίωι, lines 5-6)
This individual, with the Roman name Lucius Orbius, and mentioned in the name of the association, is either its founder or its leader. The name and the family are relatively famous: L. Orbius may have been the commander who led the Delians in a victory against Athenian supporters of Mithridates in 87 BC (Athen. V.241f). Several dedications of members of his family and his freedmen are known on Delos (as Hermaistai: cf. CAP Inv. 890, e.g. ID 1742, 1745, 2001, and 2577). In the case of this association from Kos, it is unclear which precise L. Orbius may be meant, though a connection with Delos and a group of worshippers of Apollo Dalios is both possible and intriguing.

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Certain
Note Little is known about this association and its precise context. On the basis of its name and by comparison with other highly similar boundary stones of the burial plots of associations near the city of Kos (more than 50 in number, cf. e.g. CAPI no. 1826), we can be confident that it constituted a private association.
