v. Other staff πρ[ό]ξενος τῶν ἀπὸ τῆς οἰκο[υ]μένης ἱερονεικῶν (l. ἱερονικῶν), proxenos ton apo tes oikoumenes hieronikon (I.Didyma 272, ll. 11-13): the honorand Claudius Chionis held this office/honorary charge by the hieronikai.

Status Claudius Chionis, who was proxenos of the hieronikai in I.Didyma 272 ll. 11-12, held various important offices and was an important local dignitary, whose family had held similar charges: prophet, archiprytanis, prefect at Rome, military commander at Alexandria, choregos, gymnasiarch, ambassador to the Emperor.

Meetings and events The hieronikai and stephanitai organised athletic contexts, which included the single and double race-course and race in armour: τὸν τιθέμ̣[ενον ἀγῶνα ὑπὸ τῶν ἀ]πὸ τῆς οἰκουμένης ἱερονικῶν καὶ σ[τεφανιτῶν στά]διον, δίαυλον, ὁπλίτην, ton tithemenon agona hypo ton apo tes oikoumenes hieronikon kai stephaniton stadion, diaulon, hopliten (I.Didyma 201, ll. 5-7).
iv. Honours/Other activities The hieronikai had granted the local dignitary Claudius Chionis the title of proxenos: I.Didyma 272 ll. 11-12.

i. Comments Although very likely, the lack of further information does not allow any absolute certainty on whether hoi apo tes oikoumenes hieronikai kai stephanitai of I.Didyma 201 corresponded to hoi apo tes oikoumenes hieronikai of I.Didyma 272.

Note The well-known nature of the world-wide athletic organisation (synodos) of the hieronikai and stephanitai does not leave doubts about this being a private association.
