IV. NAME AND TERMINOLOGY

ii. Name elements
Personal:Πολυκλείων, Polykleion - From the Greek personal name Πολυκλῆς Polykles (LGPN I s.v. 56-60, cf. CAPInv. 2012 and CAPInv. 2013). The compound name likely suggests a founder or a benefactor of the association, (cf. Thomsen (forthcoming), Gabrielsen 1997 p. 126-7, Maiuri 1916 p. 141, Poland 1909 p. 73-6).
iii. Descriptive terms κοινὸν, koinon
Note The inscription is fragmented on the left and right of the inscription. The descriptive term was restored by Carratelli, and it seems likely based on the phraseology of the inscription (ASAA 22 [1939-1940], 155-56, no. 17, l. 5).

V. SOURCES

i. Source(s) ASAA 22 (1939-1940), 155-56, no. 17

XII. NOTES

ii. Poland concordance - Gabrielsen, Vincent (1997), The Naval Aristocracy of Hellenistic Rhodes, Aarhus.

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Certain
Note The use of a personal name element and the dedicatory-honourific context of the attested inscriptions make the private character of the association certain, although a descriptive term might be lacking.
