Cultic:Σαμοθραικιασταί, Samothraikiastai - worshippers of the Samothracian gods. It is likely that the association of Samothrakiastai were connected to the mystery cult on the island, yet it remains uncertain whether all members were initiated into the Samothracian Mysteries. The associations of the Samothrakiastai were prominent in their role in protecting sailors (cf. Cole, 1984, 85-6).

X. ACTIVITIES

iv. Honours/Other activities The Koinon of Samothracians crowned Μοσχίων Φασηλίταν Moschion Phaselitan with a golden crown (NSER 43 l. 6, cf. Boyxen 2018, 128, and Thomsen, 00-00). The inscription had originally been erected by the Samothrakiastai, wherein they mentioned previous honours bestowed upon Moschion by other associations. The inscription mentions two foliage crowns (θαλλίνωι στεφάνωι, thallinoi stephanoi) from the Παναθηναϊστᾶν, Panathenaistan and the Ἀφροδισιαστᾶν, Aphrodisiastan (CAPInv. 2102 and CAPInv. 2008 Reference to the two other associations).

XI. INTERACTION

i. Local interaction The association of Samothrakiastai advertised merits of Moschion as awarded by other associations. According to Boyxen this points towards a wider public audience than the association of the Samothrakiastai alone. In this way the association visibly showed their local interactions with other associations as well as important locally residing foreigners. (Boyxen 2018, 128, and Thomsen, 00-00, ??).
ii. Interaction abroad The Moschion Phaselitan honoured by the Samothrakiastai, was from Phaselis. A connection between Rhodian associations and Phaselians is not uncommon, since we have references to some thirty individuals buried on Rhodes from Phaselis, many of which had honours bestowed upon them by Rhodian associations (see Boyxen 2018, 380).

XII. NOTES

i. Comments We know of several associations connected with the cult of the Samothracian gods along the Aegean in the Hellenistic period (cf. Methymna; CAPInv.13, Syme; CAPInv. 57, and Teos; CAPInv. 1678).

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Certain
Note The descriptive term koinon (κοινόν), used together with a theophoric name element, guarantees the private character of the association.
