Name elements |
Cultic: | Σαμοθραικιασταί, Samothraikiastai - worshippers of the Samothracian gods. It is likely that the association of Samothrakiastai were connected to the mystery cult on the island, yet it remains uncertain whether all members were initiated into the Samothracian Mysteries. The associations of the Samothrakiastai were prominent in their role in protecting sailors (cf. Cole, 1984, 85-6).
Παναθηναϊσταί, Panathenaistai - The element Panathenaistai, as Blinkenberg notes (I.Lindos II, col. 797), derives from Panathenaia. However, there is little (other than the use of the Attic form) to support his inference that the Panathenaistai strateuomenoi/strateusamenoi were an association sent as a sacred embassy (theoria) to the Athenian Panathenaia, cf. C. Blinkenberg, Trihemiolia. Étude sur un type de navire rhodien. Lindiaka 7 (Copenhagen, 1938), 50. Indeed, there is evidence for a Panathenaia festival with competitions in Kamiros: Tit.Cam. nos. 106, l. 13; 110, l. 56; 159, l. 3. | Personal: | τῶν σὺν Κτησιφῶντι, ton syn Ktesiphonti - From the Greek personal name Κτησιφῶν, Ktesiphon. The name element indicates that Ktesiphon was a leader of the association. He was honoured in the inscription and named benefactor of the association. | Theophoric: | Ἀριστοβουλιασταί, Aristobouliastai - From the epithet of the goddess Artemis (Morrelli, I culti in Rodi [Pisa, 1959], 28-33, 112-15).
Ἑρμαϊσταί, Hermaistai - From the god Hermes (Morrelli, ibid. [Pisa, 1959], 15-20, 94-99).
