VII. ORGANIZATION

ii. Leadership Cl. Menis, who was in charge of the setting up of the honorific inscription and the likely statue, might have been the leader of the guild of dyers.

VIII. PROPERTY AND POSSESSIONS

i. Treasury/Funds The preparation of honours and a statue without using public funds presumes the existence of private funds by this association.

X. ACTIVITIES

iv. Honours/Other activities The only inscription attesting the activities of this guild of dyers records the honours of P. Ael. Quintus Cl. Philippianus Varus (cf. Brandt 1992: 138-9).

XI. INTERACTION

i. Local interaction The setting up of the honours followed a resolution of the council and people of Sagalassos. P. Ael. Quintus Cl. Philippianus Varus is praised as 'private benefactor' of the association. This member of the local elite had also been perpetual agonothetes (l. 4) of the Clarian and Varian games and provided gladiatorial shows for four days when he was highpriest of the imperial cult.

XII. NOTES

i. Comments The t.p.q. of the inscription can be established in the reign of Hadrian because of his nomen Aelius. This man might be identical to the Cl. Philippianus Varus appearing as perpetual agonothetes of the Clarian games in which a certain Aurelius Idomeneus won after AD 212 (cf. Devijver 1996: 118-9).
