VIII. PROPERTY AND POSSESSIONS

iv. Endowments The geitosyne has received a number of tools from Aur. Aristeas, under the condition that they adorn his wife's grave with roses.

X. ACTIVITIES

iii. Worship The association will celebrate the Rosalia at the grave of the donor's wife. The donor was Jewish (or possibly Christian), but this does not allow for conclusions regarding the association. Ramsay's conclusion that "we must understand that the Society to which he left his bequest was a Chr(istian) benefit and burial society" (Ramsay 1897: 563) is unwarranted.
iv. Honours/Other activities The association is supposed to adorn the grave of the donor's wife with roses every year.

XII. NOTES

i. Comments The geitosyne is the recipient of an endowment tied to grave-care; cf. the many examples from Hierapolis. Nothing suggests that the "neighborhood" was a professional association (cf. in general Pont 2013). It is unclear if and how the geitosyne was formally organized (e.g., were there magistrates who received the tools as representatives of the geitosyne?).

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Probable
Note The status of neighbourhood-associations is debatable. That they were not official civic subdivisions is plausibly argued by Pont 2013.
