XII. NOTES

i. Comments Several professional associations had their seats in the latrines of the gymnasium of Vedius. This is the only inscription containing more than one name. Above the eriopolai (l. 3, cf. CAPInv. 1466) and the astipolai (l. 4, CAPInv. 1467), there were at least two other associations mentioned, because linoplokoi is preceded by kai. This part of the inscription has been erased for unknown reasons - these associations either lost their seats, or gave them up (if paymens were involved), or - another unprovable possibiliy - this was an older name of the eriopolai.

i. Private association Probable
Note Professional associations in the 2nd/3rd century were often very close to the official civic institutions, but they probably remained essentially private associations.
ii. Historical authenticity Certain
