Online Resources IGBulg IV. 2337
i.a. Source type(s) Epigraphic source(s)
i.b. Document(s) typology & language/script Catalogue of names in Greek
i.c. Physical format(s) Marble stele, upper part broken
ii. Source(s) provenance Nicopolis ad Nestum, exact finding place not recorded.

VII. ORGANIZATION

v. Other staff The abbreviation ΣΑΛΠΙ, SALPI, following a personal name at l. 4, is generally restituted as σαλπι(στής), salpi(stes).

No convincing restitution has been advanced for the abbreviation ΓΕΛ, GEL, following the names of two more persons at l.5 and 6; Mihailov correctly pointed out that there are no personal names of Thracian origin formed on the stem Γελ-, Gel.

IX. MEMBERSHIP

i. Number 17 persons named in the preserved part of the text; but originally more, since the upper part is missing.
ii. Gender Men
Note The attested names of members are male names.
iv. Status Most names of Thracian origin, with only few of Greek or Roman (three and one respectively). The lack of patronymics (with two exceptions, possibly to differentiate among persons with the same name, and despite available space at the right side of the stele), can be interpreted as a sign of low social status.

XII. NOTES

i. Comments For a second catalogue of names from Nicopolis ad Nestum, see IGBulg IV. 2336.

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Discarded
Note The only indication that this catalogue of names could refer to members of an association is the term σαλπι(στής), salpi(stes), restituted in l. 4 (see above, section VII.v). Even if this restitution is accepted, the text offers no signs of this group's durability.
