X. ACTIVITIES

iv. Honours/Other activities The first of the two wreaths depicted in Chrestion’s sarcophagus bears the inscription: ἑταῖροι, hetairoi (the other bears the inscription: οἱ φίλοι, hoi philoi). This may allude to a posthumous award of a crown by the fellow-members of the deceased in an association (perhaps to be distinguished from his other friends) and/or to an annual commemorative crowning of his tomb. Cf. below under field XII.i: Comments.

XII. NOTES

i. Comments The term hetairoi was used to denote both members of political groups and religious associations (Poland 1909: 54; Robert 1983: 50). The hetairoi mentioned in this epigram may have been members of such an association (cf. above under field X.iv: Activities) but its exact name (possibly simply ἑταῖροι, hetairoi) and nature escape us.
The crowning of the deceased by the hetairoi may indicate the existence of a common treasury. However, it is equally possible that the money required for this crowning was drawn from individual ad hoc contributions. See under X.iv: Honours/other activities.
