It is perhaps noteworthy that both associations securely attested in Epirus (cf. CAPInv. 842) use the very term, koinon, used by the Epirote state and its subdivisions.

VII. ORGANIZATION

iii. Members The members are called σύγγονοι, syngonoi, "relatives". The term is poetic and rarely used in epigraphic prose.

i. Number Four persons are named besides the koinon as dedicants of the monument.
ii. Gender Men
Note All four persons identified by name are men.
v. Relations Kleomachos son of Nikanos, Filisstos son of Lykotas and Nikanos son of Filisstos are obviously related, as expected in a kinship-based collectivity.

X. ACTIVITIES

iii. Worship On the basis of the dedication to Poseidon, it is possible to suppose worship by the group. On the cult of Poseidon in Epirus, see Franke 1961: 290-4.

Note There is nothing to suggest that the koinon ton syngonon was in any way different from other private associations of extended families or of descendants of a particular person known from other parts of the Greek world (cf. Poland 1909: 87-8).
