VI. BUILT AND VISUAL SPACE
i. | Archaeological remains |
Sarapieion C (GD100) is located in the Inopos river valley, not far away from Sarapieion A and Sarapieion B. It borders with the Sanctuary of the Oriental Gods to its eastern end. The cult of Sarapis in Sarapieion C came under official supervision sometime around 190-180 BC, whereas in the period of the Second Athenian Occupation the priest of Sarapis was annually appointed by the Athenians (Roussel 1915-1916: 47-69; Bruneau 1970: 462-3). The history of the sanctuary goes back to the early 3rd c. BC (earliest inscription attesting to the cult of Isis is RICIS 202/0160). Unlike the other Sarapieia on Delos, Sarapieion C is equipped with a dromos, an Egyptian architectural element, which however should be dated to a later construction phase (Siard 2003). |
VII. ORGANIZATION
i. | Founder(s) | If the restoration in line 2 is correct (οὓς συνήγαγε]ν), then Monimos was in all likelihood the founder of the association. For parallels see CAPInv. 218; CAPInv. 438; CAPInv. 439; CAPInv. 442; CAPInv. 447. |
iv. | Officials |
ἱερε?]ύς, [hiere]us (l. 3) (largely restored) On account of the badly preserved text it is not clear whether the hiereus in line 3 was a priest of the Sarapiastai or the official priest of Sarapis. |
X. ACTIVITIES
iii. | Worship | The dedication was addressed to Apollo and Artemis (IG XI.4 1343, ll. 5-6). |
Deities worshipped |
Apollo Artemis |

XIII. EVALUATION
i. | Private association | Probable |
Note | Due to the poorly preserved text, some doubt should be retained as to the nature of this group whose name is largely restored. |
