XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Discarded
Note Poland instead of reading Θαλίαρχος (personal name) reads θαλίαρχος and thus he thinks that this term stands for an official, otherwise unattested. On the other hand, the personal name Θαλίαρχος is well attested in Nisyros (IG XII.3, 89; IG XII.3 98; AEphem 1913: 15 no. 45).
Poland reads οἰνοφ[ύλαξ] in line 4 (Poland 1909: 392). It seems, however, that the inscription records personal names in tune with IG XII.3 93, where a similar formula is attested: dedication to Hermes followed by personal names. Instead of οἰνοφ[ύλαξ], one could read Οἰνόφ[ιλος], a personal name attested in Nisyros (AEphem 1913: 8 no. 4).
The term synaristion may refer to an association of 'lunch-mates', but a connection to the army or the gymnasium would conform better to the context of the text. The synaristion in both inscriptions is followed by a dative case: Hermai, denoting a dedication to Hermes, the palaistra god. In IG XII.3 93, l. 18 the term paidon is attested followed by a list of personal names. Both inscriptions record names, possibly of victors' in athletic or gymnastic contests.
