IV. NAME AND TERMINOLOGY

ii. Name elements
Cultic:Bakchoi
Geographical:Kynosoureitai: this name is otherwise unattested (to my knowledge). It might derive from the place-name Kynosoura in Arkadia, Lakonia and Megaris (Curtius 1874: 4) or from a place near Kyzikos.
Status-related:protoi: this epithet seems to denote that there were more than one Bacchic associations in Kyzikos unless it discloses aspirations to excellence on behalf of this association (Jaccottet 2003, vol. 2: 168).
Other:Kynosoureitai - Kynosoura is the ancient Greek name for the constellation Ursa Minor (Aratus, Phaenomena, 1.36; Vitr. De archit. IX.4.5).
