Members |
The members are called φιλοβασιλισταί, philobasilistai (verso, l. 2).

Number |
It is difficult to reconstruct the number of members of the philobasilistai: only two of them (Pates and Pachrates) are named. However, the Demotic letter C.Jud.Syr.Eg. 3 (cf. CAPInv. 825) was written to Pates and Pachrates and 21 other named men: despite the absence of any relevant reference in the text, they may well have been the other philobasilistai (certainly they were Pates and Pachrates' companions of arms).

Comments |
The philobasilistai included the named addressees of the letter (Pates and Pachrates) and their fellow soldiers, as indicated in the address on the verso of the letter (see relevant commentary in C.Jud.Syr.Eg. 1). They belonged to the camp of Pathyris (cf. C.Jud.Syr.Eg. 8) but moved according to the needs of war. The membership of the philobasilistai overlapped with or at any rate had some interest in the association in honour of the god Nechtpharaus (and of the crocodile god Souchos), as a certain Porteis, hegemon of the men in selection, and the neaniskoi of the company informed the philobasilistai that they had chosen the prostates of the association of Nechtpharaus (cf. CAPInv. 825).

Note |
The terminology used (philobasilistai) makes it certain that we have here a private association.
