Honours/Other activities |
The synodos honoured Marcius Xenokrates, a citizen of Herakleia, for his overall conduct (ll. 2-4: καὶ διὰ τὴν τῶν | ἠθῶν σεμνότατα καὶ διὰ τὴν τοῦ βίου κο|σμιότατα, kai dia ten ton ethon semnotata kai dia ten tou biou kosmiotata) and for various but unspecified benefactions towards the association (ll. 7-14: ἀλλὰ | καὶ <τ>ῇ κατὰ τὴν εὔνοιαν σπουδῇ φιλοτειμό|τατος ὑπάρχων, ὡς καὶ τοὺς καθ’ ἕνα τῶν ἡμε|τέρ̣ων συνοδιτῶ<ν> εὐεργετεῖν καὶ ἐν τοῖς | τῷ κοινῷ ἀνήκουσι προθύμως ἅπαντα πράτ|τειν, ὡς καὶ ἤδη διὰ τῆς ἑαυτοῦ προνοίας | οὐ κοινὰ οὐδὲ τὰ τυχόντα κατορθῶσαι ἡμεῖ|ν, alla kai <t>ei kata ten eunoian spoudei philoteimotatos hyparchon, hos kai tous kath’ hena ton hemeteron synodito<n> euergetein kai en tois toi koinoi anekousi prothymos hapanta prattein, hos kai ede dia tes heautou pronoias ou koina oude ta tychonta katorthosai hemein). The honours included an εἰκών, eikon, and an ἀνδριάς, andrias (l. 23). The honorand also appears as ἰατρός (iatros) in a dedication to Asklepios, the fatherland (i.e. Herakleia Pontika) and Hygeia (I.Heraclea Pontica 7). According to L. Jones (I.Heraclea Pontica 2, p. 6), he had served the association in this capacity. Hence, the benefactions towards the synodos may be related to his profession.

Interaction abroad |
Being a travelling association, the synodos interacted with various individuals and institutions all over the Greco-Roman world. Here we find it awarding honours to a prominent citizen of Herakleia Pontika.

Comments |
On the title(s) and the organization of the world-wide association of artists in the Imperial period see Poland 1909: 144-145 and more recently Aneziri 2008: 222-3 and 227-9 and Aneziri 2014: 435-6. The cost of the honours awarded to Marcius Xenokrates is an indirect indication for the existence of a common treasury.

Note |
The terminology used and the nature of the international synodos of artists proves that we are dealing here with a private association.
