XII. NOTES

i. Comments The text (reading τῶν θιασωτῶν, ton thiasoton) was published by Lenormant (1867: 292, no. 283) 'ex apographo Fauvellii'. I have not been able to identify the text with an inscription in the Inscriptions de Délos or any other epigraphic corpus, and its attribution to Delos and possibly its authenticity are doubtful. While Lenormant includes no. 283 under the heading 'Delos', it seems that two of the other three texts listed there can be identified with Attic inscriptions (cf. IG II2 1759, ll. 1-8; and IG II2 4122). Lüders included the text (1873: 167, no. 52), noting suspicions about the inscriptions published by Lenormant; cf. Ziebarth 1896: 43, no. 5. The text appears in the list of material assembled by Poland (1909: 562, no. B 199; cf. p. 23), without any indications of doubt about its Delian provenance and/or its authenticity.

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Possible
Note Besides concerns about the authenticity of the text and its attribution to Delos (see 'Comments'), it is difficult to say whether the thiasotai should be interpreted as members of a private association, or whether they are in fact a more loosely defined group of worshippers.
ii. Historical authenticity The authenticity of the inscription and its attribution to Delos are doubtful. See 'Comments'.
