VI. BUILT AND VISUAL SPACE

ii. References to buildings/objects πυρός, pyros wheat

VII. ORGANIZATION

iv. Officials The order for payment was written by Apollonios and Nikandros, the two χρηματοφύλακες τ̣[οῦ] κ̣ροκοδίλου, chrematophylakes tou krokodilou (l. 2): the title very likely refers to the treasurers of an association in honour of the god crocodile.

VIII. PROPERTY AND POSSESSIONS

i. Treasury/Funds If the interpretation of the chrematophylakes tou krokodilou is correct and we should see in them the treasurers of an association of the crocodile god, then the association had a treasury and funds. Furthermore, on the basis of the fact that the present text is an order of payment from the association, it derives that the association was involved in activities of loans on credit or sales on delivery of wheat (presumably for its members).

IX. MEMBERSHIP

ii. Gender Men
Note The two treasurers of the association and the other two people attested in the order of payment (who were presumably also members of the association) are men.
iii. Age Adults
Note The people attested in the text and involved with the association seem to be adults.
vi. Proper names and physical features Ἀπολλώνιος κα̣ὶ Ν̣ί̣[κ]α̣νδρος χρηματοφύλακες τ̣[οῦ] κ̣ροκοδίλου

X. ACTIVITIES

iv. Honours/Other activities The association had entrepreneurial activities of loans in money or kind or purchases of wheat.

XII. NOTES

i. Comments The exact provenance of the text within the Arsionite nome is uncertain. The association may have been based at Tebtynis, where other associations of the crocodile god are attested in the Demotic evidence. However, this is uncertain.

XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Probable
Note The interpretation of the passage chrematophylakes tou krokodilou as indicating the treasurers of an association of the crocodile god seems very probable on the basis of parallel evidence of private associations set up in honour of the crocodile. However, there is also the small possibility that the term refers to some other organisation of religious or cultic nature, if not to a temple of the god crocodile itself.
