XIII. EVALUATION

i. Private association Possible
Note It is possible that the farmers of the Imperial estate gathered in association and appointed a president to manage their organisation and bear responsibility — in particular concerning production, dues, and taxes, presumably — to the (probably absentee) estates’ manager, the Alexandrian Gaius Julius Iollas. However, the group can also simply be the result of the ad hoc organisation of farmers for purposes of their work and not a proper association. The lack of specific terminology for association and of further information prevents a secure judgement on the question.
