CAPInv. 893: Pompeiastai

I. LOCATION

i. Geographical area Aegean Islands
ii. Region Delos
iii. Site Delos

II. NAME

i. Full name (original language) Πομπηιασταὶ (I.Délos 1797, l. 1)
ii. Full name (transliterated) Pompeiastai

III. DATE

i. Date(s) a. 67 BC

IV. NAME AND TERMINOLOGY

i. Name in other forms Πονπηιασ[ταὶ οἱ ἐν Δήλωι?], Ponpeias[tai hoi en Deloi] (I.Délos 1641a, l. 2)
ii. Name elements
Geographical:en Deloi ? (fully restored)
Personal:Pompeius -- The association called itself after the Roman general Pompey the Great. While their name thus refers to a person, the ending -astai is most commonly used in connection to deities, and it could perhaps be argued that Pompeiastai is used in a theophoric sense.
Theophoric:Pompeius ? -- See above: 'Name elements, Personal'
iii. Descriptive terms σύνοδος, synodos
Note While old eds. of the fragment I.Délos 1641a restored koinon ([τὸ κοινὸν] τῶν Πονπηϊασ[τῶν], [to koinon] ton panpeias[ton]. Homolle 1884: 148; Syll.2 336; Syll.3 749A; followed also by Ziebarth 1896: 43, no. 6; Poland 1909: 561, no. B 188; cf. Durrbach, Choix 162), the other part of the stone with which it was later united specifically contains the term synodos (I.Délos 1641b, l. 5; 7), which suggests that synodos instead of koinon should also be restored in the fragment ([ἡ σύνοδος] τῶν Πονπηϊασ[τῶν]. Roussel and Launey in I.Délos 1641a). Note also the mention of [syn]odoi in I.Délos 1797; see below: 'Local interaction'.

I.Délos 1641b: cylindrical part of the same marble base as I.Délos 1641a
The two parts were put together by Roussel 1987: 333, n. 4; cf. Durrbach, Choix 162.
I.Délos 1797: upper part of a circular base, broken into four fragments
ii. Source(s) provenance I.Délos 1641: now in the western end of the 'Portique d'Agone' (Roussel and Launey in I.Délos 1641; cf. Trümper 2011: 78, no. 15); I.Délos 1641b was also found at the 'Portique des Cornes' (Fougères 1887: 256) = 'Portique d'Agone' (cf. Holleaux 1907: 336-7); the exact findspot of I.Délos 1641a is unclear
I.Délos 1797: found in a well at the sanctuary of Apollo, near 'Trésor Δ' (Roussel and Hatzfeld 1910: 400)

VII. ORGANIZATION

ii. Leadership [ἄρ]χων τῆς συνόδου, [ar]chon tes synodou (I.Délos 1641b, l. 5), named Zenon, probably also son of Zenon; specifically called leader 'of the association'
iv. Officials συναγωγεύς, synagogeus (I.Délos 1641b, l. 6), named Αὖλος Καλούιος / Aulus Calvius (cf. I.Délos 1684, l. 2; 1758, l. 1); official serving 'for life' (διὰ βίου, dia biou)
γραμματεύων τῆς συνόδου, grammateuon tes synodou (I.Délos 1641b, l. 7), serving as secretary 'of the association' for the third time (τὸ τρίτον, to triton); possibly the person who is called demosios (cf. AGRW 238); see below

note also the following (not necessarily an official of the synodos):
δημόσιος, demosios (I.Délos 1641b, l. 8), named Dionysios (son of Lenaios, or servant of Lenaios?); thought to have been some kind of public slave or servant (Fougères 1887: 256; Durrbach, Choix 162; AGRW 238).

IX. MEMBERSHIP

ii. Gender Men
Note The named officials of the association are men.
iv. Status One of the officials of the synodos, Αὖλος Καλούιος / Aulus Calvius (I.Délos 1641b, l. 6), seems to have been a member of the Italian community on Delos. His son, Marcus Alvius, was involved in one of the Italian associations (I.Délos 1758, l. 1), jointly making a dedication to Apollo and the Italians in 74 BC. Cf. CAPInv. 889, CAPInv. 890, CAPinv. 891

X. ACTIVITIES

ii. Meetings and events [σύν]οδοι, [syn]odoi (I.Délos 1797) ? -- If the word does not refer to associations (cf. CAPInv. GR-7), perhaps it concerns meetings held by the Pompeiastai, but this is not certain.
iii. Worship Roussel and Launey (in I.Délos 1641) suggest that the Pompeiastai dedicated their statue of Pompey the Great to Apollo, Artemis, and Leto, which would be quite common in a Delian setting, but depends completely on restoration.
iv. Honours/Other activities The Pompeiastai set up a statue of Pompey the Great (I.Délos 1641a).

XI. INTERACTION

i. Local interaction The Pompeiastai set up a statue of Pompey the Great together with the Athenians (I.Délos 1641a). If the [syn]odoi in I.Délos 1797 should be understood as associations (see CAPInv. GR-7), the Pompeiastai appear to be mentioned in connection with other associations on Delos, but the context remains unclear.
ii. Interaction abroad The Pompeiastai called themselves after the Roman general Pompey the Great and set up a statue of him (I.Délos 1641a).
