iv. Officials Priests: the local branch of the Isthmian technitai based in the Helicon send to the festival of the Mouseia a priest of the Muses (I.Thespiai 165, ll. 4-6). The Helikonian technitai do not send priests of Dionysos as I.Thespiai 165, ll. 8-10, heavily restored, suggests. The restoration of I.Thespiai 165 no longer stands (see Marchand 2016): we are instead dealing with pyrphoroi.
Pyrphoroi: the Helikonian technitai send two pyrphoroi to the festival of the Mouseia, one of the Muses and one of Dionysos (I.Thespiai 165, ll. 8-11 with new readings by Marchand 2016; I.Thespiai 170, ll. 7-12). On pyrphoroi, who are attested among technitai in the Greek world only at Thespiai: Aneziri: 137.

iii. Worship The fact that the technitai of the Helicon send a priest of the Muses and pyrphoroi of the Muses and of Dionysos to the Mouseia implies that they were worshipping both. On the technitai and Dionysos and the Muses: Le Guen II: 84-6.


i. Comments Le Guen II: 22-3 and Roesch 1982: 193-4: the fact that in I.Thespiai 170 only delegates of the local technitai of the Helicon and none from the main branch appear may be related to the joint defection between 118 and 112 BC of the Theban technitai with some technitai from other Boiotian cities (see CAPInv. 989). However, this local company of Helikonian technitai could potentially have been founded after the dissolution of the Boiotian Confederacy in 172/1, or after 146, when the Thespian struggled to organise the Mouseia without the support of the Confederacy (see detailed discussion in Marchand 2016; cf. Manieri 2009: 384-5). In this light, a later date for I.Thespiai 165, closer to that of I.Thespiai 170, would be possible.
